Histolab started its activities in 2012, with the reorganization of the former Veterinary Medicine Faculty structures into one merged department: the Department of Veterinary Sciences.
It is physically located in the historic site of the department in Viale delle Piagge 2, Pisa.
The laboratory staff includes 5 professors and 3 research assistants; available competencies range from histochemistry, routine histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and preparation of samples for TEM analyses. The structure collaborates with other laboratories that can provide western blot and molecular biology techniques. This makes Histolab a multidisciplinary laboratory with focus on morphological evaluation.
The research interests of the laboratory staff are mainly related to veterinary medicine aspects. They include (but not limited to) tissue repair and regeneration, central nervous system morphology, morphological basis of dermatological disease.
In the years of activities the laboratory has grown its equipment attracting funds mainly coming from the private world, for research projects focused at the histological evaluation of tissues from animals allocated to multidisciplinary studies with different final objectives; a non-exhaustive list of ongoing and performed studies includes collaborations with:
